Justin, Scott and Andre went to Tripoli.
Yes. The same one that’s in Libya. The same Libya that was in the NEWS recently because of a certain leader who was eventually killed.
If you were planning a vacation in Africa - a majority would cancel out Libya as a choice - a majority of that majority may never even consider it in the first instance.
But Justin, Scott and Andre went to Tripoli.
These awesome guys are from the real life travel series ‘Departures’ - something I’ve become quite fond of.
I gawked at the television, intrigued by the very act of them traveling to a place that I’ve only seen on the news. I only got the violence and trauma on the news but I knew their camera would take me into the actual place and I would see something else.
Libya is beautiful.
Locked away for decades, it is so well preserved. The government has it in such a way that outsiders (to use the guys’ words) feel “privileged” to be there. It simply was not accessible before Gaddafi.
They were on their own just running through an abandoned city.
Abandoned. As in there was not one human in that part of Libya. They played a game of hide and seek which I thought was hilarious.
As Andre navigated through the narrow pathways of this ghost town I found myself appreciating it. When he got to a rooftop I was amazed. Such a beautiful city. Clean and lovely.
Then they went to the desert. Took my breath away. It was fun to see them sandboarding on the huge sand dunes. I hoped to do that someday.
And then the oasis. So pretty. So unspoiled. I even felt privileged that they took me there.
I sit here asking myself why I care so much about the fact that some dudes went on a trip to Libya. I guess it’s not just some dudes that went to Libya. I’ve found them to be quite interesting and likeable …and real. I guess it’s also because what they’re doing I wish to do. Anywhere but here would be ideal.
I just can’t get over how lovely Libya is. How lovely Tripoli is. Grateful I am to Scott, Justin and Andre for taking their following to this country.
Dear Lord, when can I do my own version of Departures? When?
